5 Top Passive Income Streams for Freelancers in 2026

If you’ve been struggling with the uncertainty in our industry in the last couple of years, you’re not alone. Between strikes, mergers, and runaway production, it seems more difficult than ever to generate a predictable income. Even many well-established freelancers aren’t making the same income they once did. Too many things are simply out of our control.

Fortunately, there are plenty of passive and semi-passive ways to make money online. I’m generating additional income this way, and many other people are too.

What is Passive Income?

Before I get to some of my favorite passive income ideas, we should examine what’s considered passive income.

Passive income is when you make money without having to work continuously to keep it coming in. A passive income stream should continue to operate independently once it’s set up. Anything you have to work at constantly to make money, like most jobs, is not passive income.

If you’ve ever received a residual check, you generated passive income. You had to do the work to earn that residual on the front end, but you’re still earning money from that work months, years, or even decades later. Passive income is not a get-rich-quick scheme, though. It requires varying degrees of time and effort at the outset and ideally, minimal ongoing maintenance.

All solid, long-term passive income streams require work at the beginning and less work along the way as you set up workflow systems. Passive income has many benefits, including diversifying your income, providing a financial cushion, and reducing the risk of financial uncertainty during these challenging times.

Let’s look at the five top passive income streams that are ideal for freelancers.

(This post contains affiliate links. That means that if you make a purchase using one of the links, I make a small commission at no additional cost to you. It helps pay for the cost of running this blog.)

1. Affiliate Marketing

If you have a blog, a YouTube channel, a social media presence, a podcast, or an email list, you can generate affiliate marketing income. Depending on the number and quality of affiliate marketing relationships you develop, that income can be significant.

As an affiliate, you place a link to a product or service on your website, social media account, etc., and when someone purchases a product using your unique link, you make a commission. You may already know about Amazon’s affiliate program, but there are literally hundreds of other affiliate programs out there, and most of them pay out more than Amazon.

I use affiliate marketing to help cover the expenses of running my two blogs, so I know its value as a passive income stream for freelancers. The key is to build trust with your audience by only promoting products you’re familiar with and believe in.

If you want to learn more about the ins and outs of affiliate marketing and how you can make it work for you, I recommend getting the free Making Sense of Cents affiliate marketing e-book. Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, founder of Making Sense of Cents, is an expert in affiliate marketing and walks readers through the process of applying and getting approved to be a company affiliate, as well as managing affiliate relationships.

After getting Michelle's free affiliate marketing ebook, I took the Making Sense of Cents affiliate marketing course, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to earn extra money with affiliate marketing.

2. Sell Printable Products

Since learning about printable products through the Gold City Ventures e-printables course, I've become a big fan of them as a source of passive income, and I make money daily from selling printables.

What’s a printable product? It’s a digital product you create and sell that customers buy and print at home. Cards, invitations, flyers, party games, spreadsheets, certificates, checklists, and trackers are all printable products. Sites like Etsy and Teachers Pay Teachers are popular marketplaces for digital products.

Once you create the product, it can sell for years. It’s a great source of passive income. It’s also a creative endeavor that’s particularly well-suited to creative freelancers.

I sell all the printable products mentioned above and more in my own Etsy shop, and it’s a fun and easy way to earn passive income once you’ve created a product. I have several bestsellers that I created over a year ago, and they continue to sell with no effort on my part. I don’t even promote them, as Etsy does that.

I started my printables journey by downloading the Gold City Ventures Seasonal Products Secret Free E-Book. GCV founders Julie Berninger and Cody Berman each run highly successful Etsy printables shops, and they share the secrets to their success in this informative e-book.

I learned everything I know about earning passive income from printables through the excellent Gold City Ventures printables course. It got me started on my own successful journey with printable products, and I highly recommend it.

Quite a few of Cody and Julie's former students have had great success selling printables in their own online shops as well. Having this passive income stream can truly be life-changing.

3. Create a Course

If you’re an expert on a topic, there are probably people who want to learn about it and are willing to pay to do so. Sites like Teachable have simplified the process of creating courses. I get emails all the time from people selling courses, often combined with a paid community for ongoing support.

Yes, creating a course requires a fair amount of upfront work to get it off the ground, but the payoff can be massive if it’s promoted effectively. It’s not the most passive of the the passive income sources on this list, but many course creators continue to earn tens of thousands of dollars from courses they created years ago.

The best courses tend ot offer a solution to a specific problem, and tell you what you’ll be able to do once you complete the course, learn new skills, and overcome the hurdle that’s been holding you back. People are willing to pay good money for that information, which is why some course creators have profited so much from their courses.

One example is using AI tools for specific purposes. Teaching AI skills is a hot topic right now. If you’re having success using AI for specific things within your profession, sharing that knowledge is a potential course or membership.

If you’re interested in going down this path, I suggest building an email list now if you haven’t already. Promoting on social media is fine, but nothing beats an email list that you own and control.

4. Host a Niche Membership or Paid Community

Memberships and paid online communities are extremely popular. I belong to a couple of them myself, including a paid community run by Gold City Ventures, because they offer learning opportunities and support for projects and interests I’m pursuing in areas that are continuously evolving. I get support and stay current with trends and changes to help my business.

Paid communities charge monthly fees, usually ranging from $29.99 to $99.99, rather than a one-time, much higher fee for a course, so it’s essential to have a large subscriber base and be able to retain them.

There are paid communities for a wide variety of businesses and hobbies. The rise of AI has created opportunities for paid communities that offer workflow solutions. Many combine a paid community with affiliate marketing of relevant products for even more income.

Running a niche membership or paid community is probably more semi-passive than passive, but it could still be a good fit as an additional income stream for entrepreneurial freelancers.

5. Stock Media and Assets

Stock media and assets are digital files that creators upload to online marketplaces for others to license and use. Instead of selling them once, you can earn money repeatedly each time someone downloads a file. Some common examples include stock photos, video clips, music tracks, and sound effects. You may already have some of these stock media assets, or you may have seen them on platforms like Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, or Envato.

Over time, each asset can continue to generate income. As the library grows, you have more downloadable assets that can generate a relatively passive income stream.

Final Thoughts

We’re fortunate to live in a time when anyone with an internet connection can ‘productize’ their knowledge and experience into salable products. Freelancers in the film industry have unique skill sets that can be monetized to generate passive income.  The opportunities are there, and I encourage every freelancer who wants to take charge of their financial future to look into these passive and semi-passive income streams.
